Saint-Louis des Invalides: The Cathedral of the Armies

While the Dome gets all the glory, the attached Cathedral of Saint-Louis is the spiritual heart of the site. It is the seat of the Bishop of the French Armies.

The Nave of Flags

The most striking feature when you enter is the flags hanging from the upper cornice. These are captured enemy standards.

• Originally, there were hundreds, creating a dense canopy of silk.
• In 1814, as Allied armies approached Paris, the governor of the Invalides burned nearly 1,500 of them to prevent their recapture.
• The ones you see today are mostly from 19th and 20th-century campaigns (Africa, Mexico, Crimea, WWI). They are fragile, fading ghosts of past victories.

Musical Heritage

The church houses a magnificent Grand Organ built by Thierry in the 17th century.

• Concerts: The museum organizes a prestigious musical season. Attending a classical concert here, surrounded by history, is a highlight for audiophiles.
• Berlioz: The composer Hector Berlioz premiered his Requiem here in 1837, utilizing the vast acoustics of the building.

Mass

Yes, it is still an active church. Mass is celebrated regularly, often attended by military personnel in uniform. It reminds visitors that Les Invalides is not just a museum, but a living memorial.
